Understanding the Texas Wedding License Process

Whether you're tying the knot in a grand event or having a simple, intimate ceremony, it's essential to understand the wedding license process in Texas. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this crucial aspect of your wedding planning.

Step 1: Apply for Your Marriage License

In Texas, both parties must apply for a marriage license in person at a county clerk's office. You'll need to bring valid identification, such as a driver's license, passport, or birth certificate. Be prepared to provide necessary information like your social security numbers and parents' names and birthplaces.

Step 2: Observe the Waiting Period

After your application, Texas law requires a 72-hour waiting period before the marriage ceremony can be held. This waiting period can be waived for active military personnel or applicants who complete a state-approved marriage education course.

Step 3: The Ceremony

Once the waiting period is over, your wedding ceremony can take place. The marriage ceremony must be conducted within 90 days from the date the license is issued. After the ceremony, the person who officiates has the responsibility of returning the license to the county clerk's office within 30 days.

Step 4: Changing Your Name

If you decide to change your name after marriage, the marriage license will be one of the documents you will need to present when updating your social security information, driver's license, and other legal documents.

Please note: This page is intended to provide a general overview of the marriage license process in Texas. It is always a good idea to check with your local county clerk's office for the most up-to-date and detailed information, as requirements may vary from county to county.

Getting married is a joyous time filled with love and celebration. Understanding and complying with the legal aspects, like obtaining your marriage license, ensure your day goes as smoothly as possible.
